Mirror notation: symbol manipulation without inscription manipulation
نویسنده
چکیده
Stereotypically, computation involves intrinsic changes to the medium of representation: writing new symbols, erasing old symbols, turning ears, flipping switches, sliding abacus beads. Perspectival computation leaves the original inscriptions untouched. The problem solver obtains the output by merely alters his orientation toward the input. There is no rewriting or copying of the input inscriptions; the output inscriptions are numerically identical to the input inscriptions. This suggests a loophole through some of the computational limits apparently imposed by physics. There can be symbol manipulation without inscription manipulation because symbols are complex objects that have manipulatable lements besides their inscriptions. Since a written symbol is an ordered pair of consisting of a shape and the reader's orientation to that inscription, the symbol can be changed by changing the orientation rather than inscription. Although there are the usual physical limits associated with reading the answer, the computation is itself instantaneous. This is true even when the sub-calculations are algorithmically complex, exponentially increasing or even infinite.

Interaction-rules for symbol-oriented graphical user interfaces
This work describes a way of interactive manipulation of structured objects by interaction rules. Symbols are used as graphical representation of object states. State changes lead to different visual symbol instances. The manipulation of symbols using interactive devices lead to an automatic state change of the corresponding structured object without any intervention of the application. Therefo...

Object manipulation techniques in robotics can be categorized in two major groups including manipulation with and without grasp. The aim of this paper is to develop an object manipulation method where in addition to being grasp-less, the manipulation task is done in a passive approach. In this method, linear and angular positions of the object are changed and its manipulation path is controlled...

متن کاملSymbol manipulation by internal simulation of perception and behaviour
In traditional cognitive science, cognition amounts to symbol manipulation (Newell and Simon, 1972). Symbol manipulation is the processing of symbolic descriptions to produce an output that benefits an objective. Moreover, embodied models of cognitive development concern situated robots that do not rely on symbolic descriptions or on their manipulation (see, e.g., (Schlesinger, 2003)). In this ...
